Top tips for Parents from the Year 1 and 2 Teams!
Your child needs to bring in their PE kit every Monday and take it home every Friday. Please ensure that all parts of their kit are named. Please remember that if your child has long hair they must be able to tie it back for reasons of safety. All earrings and jewellery must be removed or taped for PE lessons.
Please note that Year 1 children get changed before lunch on a Friday and with the colder weather coming, children will be cold if they only have shorts. Please could you send in jogging bottoms for your child so that they stay warm.
At Cottesmore, we feel that homework is a vital way for you to be a part of your child’s learning. Your child should be reading daily and have the opportunity each day to change their book. Over the course of the term children will have a creative homework topic based around our termly theme. This allows them to complete homework that that have an interest in and ensures they can be creative. The children will also be set a weekly spellings and maths homework, based on their classroom learning that week. Usually we will use MyMaths which is an online programme. You and your child will need to know their individual login for MyMaths – if you have not received this please speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance.
Please encourage your child to read every night. When they have read, please remember to record this in reading records (even if it is just your initials – you do not necessarily need to write a comment). Book bags must be brought in everyday regardless of whether the book needs changing or not. This is so we can try and read with your child in school. In Key Stage 1, your children are rewarded for reading through the Reading Rocket. Each time your child reads at home during the week and their reading record is initialled they will move up one level of the rocket. If your child moves up five levels over the course of the week, they will be awarded with five minutes extra playtime on Friday.
It is vital that your children bring in water to keep themselves hydrated. Please ensure that you provide your child with a water bottle each day. We have a water bottle box within the classroom in order for children to be able access their drinks throughout the day.
Celebration Assembly will take place every Friday at 2.50pm. Each week one child from each class will be nominated for a Golden Award by the class team. If your child is nominated you will receive a phonecall on Thursday and will be invited to attend the assembly. We would like you to keep this a secret from your child in order for them to be surprised on the day!
At Cottesmore we believe that effective communication is essential to ensure that your child achieves their full potential. There are various ways in which you can communicate with us as a team. Please feel free to speak directly to your child’s teacher, or speak to a member of the Leadership Team who will always be available at the beginning or end of the school day.
How can I help my child?
Please try and read with your child every day and help them to practise their spellings. We will be rewarding children who consistently complete their spelling and times table homework.
We would encourage you to talk to your child about their learning, this will reinforce their knowledge. And you never know…. You might learn something yourself!
